I want to get a newspaper to review new educational software that I developed that works off a flash drive?
Where can I get a list of columnists who review Computers, New Technology, Educational Technology, etc. and the name of the newspaper where the column appears?
I had a very similar need when I first launched my website 5Deck.com. I think the best way to reach the greatest number of newspapers is a press release. You just have to write a few formal words about what you have and then you pay a press release company to send out those words to all media outlets in a specific category (some might even go as specific as "Educational Technology"). I tried it with Marketwire.com and paid about $250 to get a press release sent to almost all 'new technology' media places.
If you type in my former title to my book, you can probably still see all the press releases (it might be worthwhile to get a feel for what they look like) "4V - How to Make a Holodeck in three easy steps or less". I was very happy with the speed and breadth of distribution, however I was sad because it got lost in the fold with no reviews or anything. If you decide to go this route, you really need to write something catchy because most media outlets see hundreds of press releases at a time and only choose a spare few. I thought I had something to grab their attention but if I did it again I now know I would have to retool my approach to get noticed.
If you can't afford a press release then the best bet is simply to contact each newspaper or outlet you want to review your product. You will have to be willing to offer them a free copy to review (which shouldn't be a problem since it's software).
The real problem is getting actual contact, since if you leave a phone message or an e-mail they can very easily ignore it. Try to get an actual person on the phone and then come up with your best lines to get their attention right off the bat (like an "elevator pitch" for an invention). If all goes well you could probably get some local newspapers to pick it up and then some. Personally I am quite cynical of the extreme difficulty of these procedures for anyone without representation and then notability, and the fact that getting representation requires notability so it's a catch-22. Good luck though I hope it works out!
