Can you run a refrigerator by generator for a few hours every 4 to 5 hours and not have everything spoil?
I am looking at moving to a home that is off grid. The home is plumbed for a propane refrigerator and I do not have the money to buy one yet. Can you run a refrigerator for a few hours at a time every 4 to 5 hours by generator and not have anything spoil. This would only be temporary until I buy a propane one.
Sure you can. You need to find out how often and how long the refrigerator cycles with the door closed. That will give you some idea as to the heat gain/cold loss to the room and how long you have to run the refrigerator on the generator. You may only need to run it 30 minutes every 2-3 hrs.
But keep in mind you'll need a generator that will provide about 3x the wattage the refrigerator uses. This excess wattage is needed for the startup load the compressor needs. The wattage on the info plate of the refrigerator is only the running wattage, not the startup wattage needed.
They do make propane powered electric generators so that you don't have to keep running to the gas station to get more fuel (as often).
