Punching for Home Studio Recordists
The act of re-recording a section of a track is called "punching in" and "punching out". In this particular operation the original take gets replaced with a new one. Punching could be considered the core of a multitrack recording session.
During the unhealthy era of tape-based recording, the process of punching in and out of a track to generate new and improved versions was a really tricky operation. Only a few cassette decks were able to handle a strong dose of punching, but still allowed very little room for error. The results were poorly calibrated takes and lower fidelity sound.
Since home-based recording systems became popular and cost-effective, the recording game changed forever. Nowadays, almost all of the available audio recording programs are optimized for punching. Furthermore, you get tons of features that often make punching a seamless process.
There are three punching modes: Manual, Auto and Loop.
Manual punching
In manual punching mode, you play a section as usual and when it needs to be punched you simply turn the Record switch on. When you are done with the punching, you just push the stop button. This method requires a lightning fast hand and an incredible accurate sense of timing.
Manual punching is not recommended for people who are both the sound engineer and the recording artist because it's pretty easy to lose focus and concentration, which frequently leads to poor performance and a fairly high number of additional takes.
Auto punching
Auto punching is the technique of enabling your computer to do the punching in and punching out for you. You need to tell the recording program the starting point and the length of the new section. Before you can set your In and Out points for punching, it is important for you to decide where these cues will be placed. To do this, you probably want to play the track back to spot the exact point of punching in or punching out. You can jot down the coordinates making use of any of the measures available (bars, minutes, frames, etc.).
Loop punching
Loop punching is essentially an Auto punch which repeats itself until you the Stop switch. This method lets you generate multiple takes of a song until you are satisfied with the end results. The setting up of the In and Out cues of the loop is the same as in Auto punching, but first you need to select the Loop Record mode.
This process may vary depending on the audio software that you use. Generally you need to record-enable your track and set the pointer to the start of the section you want to punch. Then you have to activate the loop mode, and start playing as usual.
The most popular recording programs among professional engineers are Pro Tools and Logic Pro. Both tools will allow you to do the recording punching with minimum hassle.

Why am I only getting a signal through one channel on my home studio?
I have a home studio on my computer. I record guitars through a microphone through an interface. I have it set up to record in stereo but when I record it is only recording through one of the 2 stereo tracks. Why is this?
if you have one mic it will only feed one side of the stereo channel, need 2 mics for stereo, or copy and paste the left channel to right or right to left...
