What ever happened to Fred Hoyle's theory of Continuous Creation?
I always thought it was an interesting idea. I know that I should do my own research, and hope that this question isn't too out of touch. I read a lot of astronomy when I was a kid but that was years ago. I read a science fiction short story back then (James Blish?) about some space travellers who used an advanced (for it's day) microphone to detect the pinging sound of hydrogen atoms being created by the vacuum formed by the expanding universe. 10 points for best answer, and thanks in advance!!!
In 1965 cosmic background radiation was discovered which the scientific community generally accepts as irrefutable evidence of the Big Bang Theory. As Hawking said, cosmic background radiation "puts the final nail in the coffin the Steady State Theory" (also known as Continuous Creation). Hoyle's Continuous Creation Theory would also have had to include the spontaneous creation of deuterium, helium and lithium to adequately explain their presence (especially in the abundant quantities of helium and deuterium), sense their existence cannot be explained by nucleosynthesis in stars or any other observable process. Hoyle was a great man, and made significant contributions to science, but Continuous Creation is not among them.
