Playing Seven Card Stud

One of the mainly played variations of Poker, "Seven Card Stud "Poker is played at every Vegas casino and in all virtual casinos. 5 Card Stud was the first adaptation played until someone--no one is certain exactly whom--introduced "Seven Card Stud "in the early 20th century. As it is with the majority of popular card games, the origins of Poker and the history of " Seven Card Stud " Poker are shrouded in mystery. No one is completely sure how or where the game began.

The popularity of " Seven Card Stud " Poker is overshadowed only by a variant of the game called Texas Hold ‘Em, which is the main format of the World Series of Poker, the largest professional tournament in the world. Once you know how to play "Seven Card Stud "Poker, it is an easy step to learn Texas Hold ‘Em, Omaha, or any of the other popular variants.

The hand ranking order is the same for "Seven Card Stud "as it is for just about every other Poker variation played around the world. The highest possible hand is a Royal Flush, and after that in descending order are the Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, and Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair, and High Card. The odds of being dealt a high hand in "Seven Card Stud "is lower than that of Texas Hold ‘Em as you must build the hand using only the cards you receive. There are no community cards in "Seven Card Stud ".

Just like it is with every Poker game, "Seven Card Stud "starts with the ante: each player pays a small amount to the pot in order to partake in the game. There are six stages in " Seven Card Stud " Poker; known as third street, fourth street, fifth street, sixth street, the river, and the showdown. After the ante, each player is dealt two face-down cards (called hole cards) and one face-up card. This initial deal is Third Street. The player with the highest card showing initiates the betting, and will either check (not raise the pot), or bet. Then, each subsequent player can either call (match the first player's bet), raise (increase the bet amount), or fold (withdraw from the hand). Three more face-up cards are dealt to each player, one at a time, with a round of betting after each deal pass--these stages are fourth, fifth and Sixth Street.

The seventh card is known as "the river," and is dealt face-down. A final round of betting happens, after which those players who have not folded go into the last stage, called "the showdown." At this point, starting with the last player to call the bet, each player shows their individual cards and names the best five-card hand they can make with their cards (full house, two pair, etc.). The pot is given to the player with the top ranking hand, and then the next hand commences.

What poker variations do you play?

Right now, Texas Hold Em is arguably the most popular form of poker, and I believe Omaha, 7 card stud and 5 card draw are still played quite often. Do you play any other variation of poker? If so, what do you play and what do you like about it?

I have played a variation called "Anaconda", which is a form of 7 card draw. Each player is dealt 7 cards. One round of betting takes place, and then each player must PASS 3 of his cards to his right. This means if you were dealt a straight, a flush or a full house, your hand just got screwed. After the pass, another round of betting, and then you pass 2 cards. Then another round, pass 1 card, another round and the show down. It's interesting to get, say, 3, 3, 7, 7, A, K, 10 because in that situation, you have two pair, but to keep it you'd be forced to pass 3 high cards to your opponent.

I used to play many many forms of poker, but since the texas holdem craze has come about I play mostly holdem. HORSE is a good game because you play 5 different games in one (Limit holdem, Omaha HiLo, Razz, 7 card stud, and 7 card stud 8 or better). It keeps you sharp on many aspects of it. Before the Holdem explosion we would have regular poker night where the dealer picked the games. Here is many different good games to play: Seven card stud and its many variations (Black maria, follow the Queen, low Chicago, horse and buggy, and so on). Screw your neighbor which is a really fun game, 7-27, spit, guts, inbetween or high low, and 5 card draw or stud. I would explain each one but it would make it a very long answer. If you are interested in any particular game, let me know. I don't know quite how this works as it is the first time I have answered.
