The charming hobby of pitch and putt
Pitch-and-putt is a charming game: comparable to golf but played on an undersized course. It is well-loved by non-golfers because, overall, you don't need to hit the ball as far as on a full-length golf course or as accurately. This makes the game more approachable than golf, and if you are an occasional player, you don't need to fret about mediocre shots because you won't be penalised excessively. This makes pitch-and-putt a fantastic activity for friends, workmates or relatives who don't usually play golf.
The chief difference between a pitch-and-putt course and a full-size golf course is that the fairways are shortened, varying from 20 yards to 200 yards at the very most. This means that you need to play three shots at each hole: a ‘pitch' from the tee to the edge of the green, a 'chip' onto the green and one or two ‘putts' to get the ball in the hole, hence the name "pitch-and-putt".
Notionally, you should be able to play every hole in three shots, but it is never as straightforward as that!
The advantages of pitch and putt
Knowing that you can get away with only playing three types of golf shot means that you can play any pitch-and-putt course with only two types of golf club: a short iron such as an 8 or 9 iron and a putter. With less weight to carry round with you, over less distance, the non-golfer knows that it is not a physically-demanding challenge.
Another pleasing feature of pitch-and-putt is that, as a result of the course being shorter, it does not take too long to play a single round. A low-scoring round can be recounted and enjoyed, but a problematic round doesn't go on forever.
Pitch-and-putt courses can be attractive from an aesthetic perspective, as each hole is a little different. Being rather miniature, they regularly have one key aspect, which makes each hole distinctively charming and stays in your memory.
Some disadvantages
Now, because the course is shorter and you do not have to play any large drives off the tee, it is enticing to consider that playing pitch-and-putt will be more straightforward than playing a full-sized golf course. However, this short length is balanced by some features of the course design making play much riskier. Firstly, the greens are quite little, so you have to be very exact with your approach shot. Furthermore, the greens are often somewhat rough and unpredictable. On the more tricky courses, they regularly have a noticeable slope, which makes judging how hard to stroke the ball in your putting difficult to work out.
The sand traps on pitch-and-putt courses, if you have any, are often rather compacted and shallow and often contain hardly any sand. This makes it pretty complicated to hit the ball out of the sand trap cleanly and you have little green to work with when the ball lands. So avoid them!
Some strategies for pitch and putt
There are several different strategies to use in playing pitch-and-putt, and you can be a consummate player without playing any ‘proper' golf shots. However, there are several methods that I have learned over the years that help to keep my score passable:
- Customarily, your first shot, the pitch, should be directed in line with the direction of the hole, unless there is an recognisable feature in the way, such as a water hazard or flag at side of green.
- Avoid ponds and pools at all costs!
- It pays dividends to 'float' your shots, hitting the ball upwards at a steep angle, but hoping that when it lands it doesn't roll too far. Often ‘bump and run' where you pay a low, skiddy shot close to the ground doesn't work well in pitch-and-putt because the ball travels through the green and beyond.
- Don't bother if your tee shot is to the side or too short; your key shot is your second. This is the shot that gets you within close distance of the hole. You can recover from a bad tee shot with a well-executed chip, but a fluffed second shot will leave you further from the hole than before you started and you can quickly take two additional shots to get to the hole.
- Generally, it pays to be lighter with your putts, than firm. Most pitch-and-putt greens are only watered by the rain and are therefore pretty fast.
Final thoughts
To conclude, if you have a depressing hole, don't worry, there is always another one coming just round the corner and if you have a bad round, don't be depressed, you have an easy opportunity to lower that score the next time you play.

My daughter (turning 11) is having a green and orange theme birthday party? We have an indoor putt-putt course but its gotten pretty boring after the 50th time. I was hoping to take the girls split them up into color based teams and pit them against each other. It looks like we'll have between 6 and 10 fifth grade girls. Thanks!
Have them play best ball. Split them up evenly then take the single best score from each hole for that team. Then obviously the team with the lowest score wins.
