What Is a Max File ?
Several different programs have used the ".max" extension to identify saved files on a computer. When a program opens a file created by a different program, it can have disastrous results.
File Extensions Explained
A "filename extension" has historically been used to identify different document types on a
computer system. As one example, the filename "readme.txt" implies a file that instructs the user to read it ("read me") and that it is a human-readable document in plain, or unformatted, text (".txt"). In Windows, this file would be automatically opened in NotePad because of the ".txt" extension free 3d models.
Mismatched Filename Extensions
Some programs will coincidentally use the same filename extension(s) used by other programs. When one program tries to open documents from the other, it can result in program errors, corrupted data, and in more serious cases, may cause the computer system to "crash" or stop working entirely.
ScanSoft (Nuance) documents
The filename extension ".max" may indicate a file generated by ScanSoft PaperPort™ or Nuance OmniPage™ that could contain raster-image data or page-layout data. Such files were typically generated using scanner equipment and are saved in a proprietary format; meaning that only the ScanSoft (now Nuance Communications) software---or a compatible viewer---can properly open the file.
3D Studio Max (3DS Max®) documents
The filename extension ".max" may indicate a file generated by 3D Studio Max that contains a three-dimensional (3D) scene with one or more "models," also called virtual objects. 3D Studio Max (now 3DS Max®) uses a proprietary format for these files, which means that only the 3D Studio Max or a compatible application can open and view the 3D information within free 3d models.
Datel Action Replay MAX (Sony PlayStation 2®) documents.
The filename extension ".max" may indicate a file generated by Datel's Action Replay MAX, which would contain information about a game-in-progress from the Sony PlayStation 2® console. When viewed in the PlayStation Memory Manager™, the filename extension would not be visible, but when transferred to a PC using portable storage---such as a MemoryStick™ card or USB drive---these files will show the ".max" filename extension. Only the "PS2 Save Builder" and "PS2 Save Converter" programs can open these files
properly on a PC system.
Safety Tip: Unknown Files
As mentioned before, opening a file with a program different from the one that created it can
cause real problems on a computer system (free 3d models). When downloading unknown files from the Internet, always be certain of how the file was created before opening it on your computer.

Why can't I edit PDF files in ScanSoft Paperport 10?
All the icons in the Image Editing Toolbar are not highlighted when I open Paperport 10 to edit a PDF file. But it will for all other file types.
PDF files were specifically made so they could not be edited.
