How do I get Win XP to accept scanner hardware/software for Mustek 600 III EP Plus?

Older ver software for Win 3.1x/95/NT. Scanner uses (printer) parallel port. Software install freezes near end of installation.

[Visitor] Cannot get the unit to work with the Mustek supplied drivers following the instructions for cleaning the old drivers and installing the XP compliant ones from the FAQ. Message received when trying to Acquire is LOAD FAIL in a message box that does not come from the Windows API. I expect it is from the Twain driver. Can you help to get this unit working. I cannot revert the systems in place to pre SP2 or an older OS.
