Speed Reading Tips You Can Use Right Now
With the current flood of information, we are required to not only consume but process large amounts of data within a short period of time. Most individuals have turned to speed reading to achieve this with exceptional results. Unfortunately, there is a common misconception that increasing your reading speed is a tough and often painful process. This article will prove to you once and for all that increasing your reading speed is easily achieved by executing a few simple steps.
Going for eye check-ups
First things first, get your eyes checked. The last thing you want to do is put all this effort into speed reading only to find out it was your eyesight that was letting you down. Regular check-ups will help your eyes function better and it will enable you to speed read more efficiently.
Speed reading tests
Use speed reading online tests to test your current reading speed. This will help you to analyze your reading speed and provide you with immense scope for improvement when you log your reading times. This is a good way of keeping yourself motivated. Make sure that you are taking necessary breaks in between and not stressing yourself out. One key point with taking these tests is to ensure that you are doing in a conducive environment.
Training yourself with different techniques
There are different techniques that ensure speed reading. Using them properly will enable you to speed read efficiently.
· Prioritization of reading material: Prioritizing your reading essentially eliminates any unnecessary reading. To speed read, rank the materials on the basis of priority according to the ones that are extremely important, moderately important and least important.
· Skimming of text: The main areas of the text of the material you are reading needs to be skimmed and filtered properly. In this way your speed will be enhanced. Turn your attention to the headings and subheads. Keep a note of the important keywords, questions and notifications. Not every word is important, so don't read each word individually.
· Focus your mind: Focus completely on the reading material so that you can comprehend it faster. Your mind needs to be very clear and sharp whenever you attempt to speed read.
· Avoid re-reading: Train yourself in such a way that you are not re-reading. Practice reading in blocks.
· Reading with your finger: Smooth movement of the eyes is extremely important and hence practice reading with your finger.
· Practice and push your limits: You need to continuously practice reading faster and once you are comfortable with a certain speed, take a chance and push your limits.
· Avoiding highlighting text: Avoiding highlighting certain chunks of sentences or words when you speed read. Contrary to popular belief, highlighting does not improve the speed of reading. In fact, you tend to read the same sentences twice in case of highlighting text.
Apart from these speed reading techniques you must also keep in mind a few things. You need to adjust your reading speed on the basis of the materials at your disposal. You should not rush through the material, especially if you are studying something that demands special and critical attention.

How many books do I have to read to improve reading speed?
I am 18 years old, and I need to increase desperately improve my reading speed. People always tell me that the more books you read, the more you are able to read faster, remember really little details... so how regular do I need to read 1.5 inch novels to improve my reading speed? Please help!
Reading many books is also the method that I've tried before. However, after I've learned some speed reading techniques, I have to say that reading books alone cannot help. Just look at people around us, many of us read a lot everyday, but most people are just reading at normal speed and do not get any improvement on their speed year after year...
For myself, I found that I can only improve my reading speed by understanding some concepts behind how to read fast then practice with them. Some techniques need to be learned, otherwise we can just use our original skill to keep reading the books. Some say we cannot understand well if we increase our reading speed, but that's not true. My reading speed and understanding have both improved after learning speed reading for around 2 months. Now my reading speed has nearly doubled, and my reading comprehension has improved too. I think I've used around one or two hours to learn and practice, not every day but most of the days within this two months, and I practice when I'm doing my schoolwork.
